“Taking Out the Trash”  FOTO’s 2010 Spring Clean-up of the Occoquan Watershed
Prince William County & Fairfax County, Virginia

HELP THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. BUY ‘FRIEND OF THE CHESAPEAKE CAR TAGS'

On Saturday April 10, 2010 the Friends of the Occoquan conducted their Spring Cleanup of the Occoquan
Watershed.  Over 200 volunteers combed the banks of the Occoquan River picking up trash and other debris.
This event was part of the 10th Annual Friends of the Occoquan and the Alice Ferguson Foundation
22nd Potomac River Watershed Clean-Up Day.

Collectively, 225 bags of trash, numerous tires, four barrel, gasoline tanks, furnitures and various other waste
articles were retrieved and properly disposed.  This is very significant since the Occoquan Reservoir is a major
source of our drinking water here in Northern Virginia. There were five major sites for the cleanup: Bull Run
Marina, Fountain Head Regional Park, Lake Ridge Marina, Occoquan Regional Park and the Town of Occoquan.

Other organizations that participated in this successful event were the Bull Run Rotary, Lake Braddock Secondary School, South County Secondary School, Osborne Park High School, Woodbridge High School and Jr ROTC,
Lake Braddock Crew Boosters, Prince William Soil & Water Conservation District, George Mason University,
Boy Scouts of America, Troops 1369 & 857, and Girl Scout Troop 932 & 2063. Other partners in this event
included the Fairfax Water, Fairfax Clean Council, Prince William Clean Council, Prince William Park Authority,
Prince William County Service Authority, Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition, Northern Virginia Park
Authority, OWL, Virginia American Water, Virginia Paving Company, and the Commonwealth of Virginia
Department of Conservation and Recreation.
