Occoquan River Fall Cleanup Day—Saturday, October 9, 2010

Volunteers came out in droves at FOTO’s Fall Cleanup

Beautiful fall weather filled with sunshine made this year’s fall cleanup a tremendous success. Two hundred and eighty
nine (289) devoted volunteers combed the shores and waters of the Occoquan River to remove debris.  A big “Thank You,” goes to all of them who made this event their priority for the day.
Students, Boy and Girl Scouts, church organizations, clubs and families filled 320 large bags with debris, not counting multiple tires, oil barrels, chairs, boards, an abandoned homeless shelter with drug paraphernalia and dirty clothes.
Duane DeBruyne hauled out a large propane gas tank near the Bull Run Marina. It’s sad but true; all these items would end up in the Occoquan River, the source of our drinking water.
FOTO could not conduct the cleanup without the cooperation of the Fairfax County Water Authority, Prince William County Parks Authority, Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, and the Town of Occoquan, as well as Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia Save the Chesapeake Bay License Plates, and Longwood University’s Coastal Cleanup Program. FOTO thanks all for helping with this effort, including our local newspapers, the Old Bridge Observer and Potomac News.
