Taking Out the Trash:  FOTO’s 2006 Fall Clean-up of the Occoquan Watershed

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA:  On Saturday October 14, 2006 the Friends
of the Occoquan conducted their Fall Cleanup of the Occoquan Watershed.
156 volunteers combed the banks of the Occoquan River picking up trash and other
debris. Collectively, 167 bags of trash, 10 lb. bag of cigarette stubs, tires, barrels,
several car batteries and various other articles were retrieved and properly disposed.
This is very significant since the Occoquan Reservoir is a major source of our drinking
water here in Northern Virginia. There were four major sites for the cleanup: the Town
of Occoquan, Lake Ridge Marina, Fountain Head Regional Park and the
Bull Run Marina. Other organizations that participated in this successful event were the
Bull Run Rotary, Lake Braddock Secondary School, South County Secondary School,
Osborne Park High School, Woodbridge High School and JROTC, Lake Braddock Crew
Boosters, Prince William Soil & Water Conservation District, and the Girl Scouts of America. Other partners in this event included the Virginia Cheapeake Bay Restoration  Fund, Fairfax Water Authority, Fairfax Clean Council, Prince William Clean Council,
Occoquan Watershed Coalition and the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of
Conservation and Recreation.
