A sunny day was in the forecast for FOTO’s River Cleanup event, but unfortunately, it turned out to be windy and rainy on Saturday morning, but that did not deter 120 participants to come out to pick up trash along the Occoquan River. Volunteers from four Cub Scouts packs, Boy Scouts and Seas Scout Troops, High School and Middle School students and several families devoted their day to make a difference. As an alternative to plastics that pollute the environment, FOTO introduced 12 burlap bags at Fountain Head and Bull Run Marina, which were used to empty into dumpsters and then reused.
At the Town of Occoquan, Lake Ridge Marina and Bull Run, 50 plastic bags of trash, 24 bags of recyclables and larger items were collected and disposed of. The majority of trash collected consisted of plastic/glass bottles, cans/cups, take out containers/utensils, fishing nets/equipment, balls, boards/foam pieces, a stroller, fire distinguisher, tires and painting/construction material.
